Exposure Geometry

API 1104 defines different exposure geometries for radiographic testing.

Important exposure techniques include:

  • Single Wall Exposure / Single Wall Viewing – SWE/SWV
  • Double Wall Exposure / Single Wall Viewing – DWE/SWV
  • Double Wall Exposure / Double Wall Viewing – DWE/DWV

For SWE/SWV, the radiation passes through one wall thickness and the image shows one wall thickness.

For DWE/SWV, the radiation passes through two wall thicknesses, but only the film-side wall is evaluated.

For DWE/DWV, the radiation passes through two wall thicknesses and both walls may be viewed. This technique may be used for smaller diameter pipe when permitted.

Image Quality Indicators IQI

Image quality indicators are used to confirm radiographic sensitivity. API 1104 permits wire-type IQIs such as ASTM E747 wire type or ISO 19232-1 wire type.

The IQI wires must be radiographically similar to the pipe and weld material being examined.

The essential wire diameter is the smallest wire that must be clearly visible across the area of interest. The essential wire diameter is based on weld thickness, not just nominal wall thickness.

This means weld reinforcement on the outside and inside of the pipe weld may need to be considered when determining the required IQI wire.

IQI Placement

Wire-type IQIs are normally placed on top of the weld with the wires transverse to the weld.

The required number and placement of IQIs depends on the radiographic exposure technique used.

When IQIs cannot be placed directly across the weld because of weld reinforcement or profile, they may be placed on a separate block of similar material, commonly called a shim. The shim helps raise the IQI to the correct height relative to the weld reinforcement.

Radiographic Image Interpretation

API 1104 limits interpretation of radiographic images of production welds to Level II or Level III radiographers.

Radiographers must report defects to the company unless the company requires all imperfections to be reported.

The radiographer states whether the weld meets the requirements of API 1104 Section 9, but the company determines the final disposition of the weld.

This is a key CWI Part C exam point because the company has final authority over weld disposition.

Radiographic Identification and Film Quality

Lead letters, numbers, or markers must be placed on the weldment to identify the radiographic image relative to the weld. This helps locate defects accurately for repair or evaluation.

Unexposed film must be stored in a clean and dry place. Damaged or fogged film may become unsuitable for use.

API 1104 also gives film density requirements for developed film. When requested by the company, film or other imaging media must be processed, handled, and stored so that the images remain interpretable for at least three years after production.

Magnetic Particle Test Method

API 1104 requires a written procedure for magnetic particle testing.

The MT procedure must be:

  • Written
  • Qualified by demonstration
  • Accepted by the company before use
  • In compliance with ASTM E709

Magnetic particle testing is used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials.

Liquid Penetrant Test Method

API 1104 requires a written procedure for liquid penetrant testing.

The PT procedure must be:

Level II and Level III UT personnel are permitted to:

  • Calibrate equipment
  • Perform tests
  • Interpret test results
  • Evaluate results according to acceptance criteria

This is an important point for the AWS CWI Part C exam because different responsibilities are assigned to different NDT qualification levels.

UT Procedure Demonstration

The UT procedure and equipment must be demonstrated and accepted by the company.

The demonstration report should include:

  • Welds containing defects and acceptable discontinuities prepared from production material
  • Radiographs of the welds with documented results
  • Application of the UT procedure to the welds
  • Comparison of UT results with radiographic results
  • Documentation of differences in detection results
  • Confirmation of the ability to locate, size, and classify indications

The UT method must be capable of locating discontinuities circumferentially, measuring length, determining depth from the OD surface, and locating the discontinuity across the weld cross-section.

UT Sensitivity and Calibration

API 1104 requires the UT process and equipment to meet minimum sensitivity requirements.

Reference blocks are used for calibration. A standard N10 notch is introduced into a sample of the pipe material to be inspected. The highest point of the DAC or TCG echo produced by this notch must not be less than 80 percent of full-screen height.

For automated UT, similar sensitivity requirements apply, with additional reference reflectors such as flat-bottomed holes and N10 notches.

Parent Material Screening

Before ultrasonic testing of a completed pipe weld begins, the parent material must be screened for reflectors that may interfere with weld inspection.

A compression wave test is performed on both sides of the weld to locate reflectors in the parent material. Once the parent material is confirmed as sound, or interfering reflectors are identified and documented, the weld may be inspected.

UT Reporting Requirements

UT technicians are required to report defects unless the company specifically requires all indications at the evaluation level and above to be reported.

The UT report must include important details such as:

  • Weld number
  • Datum location
  • Length of the indication
  • Depth from the OD surface
  • Defect classification

Defect classifications may include linear, transverse, or volumetric indications.
