Who should attend this exam?
This certification is mainly aimed at pipeline personnel, but it is also suitable for people working in painting/coating inspection, corrosion protection, QA/QC, coating application, and asset integrity roles. TWI also says you can attend even without prior painting-industry experience, but to actually gain the qualification after passing, you must show at least 6 months of industrial experience in paint application techniques or dry abrasive blast cleaning.
What topics are covered?
The official course coverage includes corrosion theory, surface preparation, surface contaminants and tests, paint constituents and technology, drying/curing, specified painting conditions, cathodic protection, holiday/pinhole detection, paint application methods, paint and paint-film testing, paint identification, and metal coatings. TWI also says the course helps candidates interpret the requirements of standards and conduct paint-system inspections.
Suggested code books/standards:
I did not find a single official public page from CSWIP/TWI that lists a fixed “required code book” set for Grade 2. Based on the official syllabus areas and the kinds of standards the course clearly aligns with, the most useful references to study are:
- ISO 8501 series for visual assessment of surface cleanliness
- ISO 8502 series for tests for surface cleanliness
- ISO 8503 series for surface roughness/profile
- ISO 19840 for dry film thickness on rough surfaces
- ISO 2808 for paint/coating film-thickness measurement
- Your project coating specification, inspection test plan, and paint manufacturer TDS/application instructions
This recommendation is an informed study suggestion from the published syllabus topics and standards-based inspection focus, rather than an official TWI-issued mandatory reading list.
Validity of certificate
BGAS-CSWIP certificates should be renewed every 5 years and recertified at 10 years.
Recertification/renewal details
For a 5-year renewal, certificate holders must submit:
- verified work experience covering at least 4 of the 5 years
- CPD records of at least 35 hours per year
- a professional experience record
- one recent passport-size photograph
- the original certificate
- a recent eyesight test certificate meeting scheme requirements
For 10-year recertification, certificate holders must:
- Apply for recertification:
- Submit the same supporting documentary evidence as for renewal
- Then sit a recertification examination after approval
- CSWIP also states that renewal or recertification applications can be submitted up to 6 months before expiry, and they recommend applying early because processing can take several weeks.
Last update in the pattern
The exam pattern I found published by CSWIP for BGAS Painting Inspector Grade 2 is in the scheme document “BGAS-CSWIP-BG-22-12, 2nd Edition, April 2019.” Current 2026 TWI schedules still show the same Grade 2 qualification being delivered, and I did not find a newer public exam-structure revision on the official CSWIP/TWI pages I checked.
