Materials and SMYS Grouping

API 1104 groups materials by specified minimum yield strength, also called SMYS. A welding procedure may qualify lower-strength materials within the same applicable group when the procedure is qualified on the highest SMYS material in that group.

The SMYS groupings include:

  • SMYS of 42,000 psi or less
  • SMYS greater than 42,000 psi but less than 65,000 psi
  • SMYS of 65,000 psi or greater, where each pipe grade requires separate qualification

Filler Metals and API 1104 Group Numbers

Electrical Characteristics

The welding procedure specification must identify the type of current, such as AC or DC. When DC is used, the polarity must also be specified as electrode positive or electrode negative.

A change in current type or polarity is an essential variable. However, changes in voltage and current ranges are not essential variables, although the welder must still weld within the ranges listed in the welding procedure specification.

Direction of Welding and Time Between Passes

The welding procedure must state whether welding is performed uphill or downhill. A change in welding direction is an essential variable.

The procedure must also specify the maximum time between completion of the root bead and start of the hot pass. An increase in this time is an essential variable because it can affect weld quality and interpass temperature control.

Preheat and Postweld Heat Treatment

The welding procedure must specify preheat requirements, including the minimum temperature, when preheat is required, and the method used.

A decrease in minimum preheat temperature is an essential variable. The addition of postweld heat treatment, or a change in PWHT time, temperature, or technique range, is also an essential variable.

Shielding Gas and Flow Rate

For welding processes using shielding gas, the welding procedure must specify the gas composition and the flow rate range.

A change in nominal shielding gas composition is an essential variable. A change in flow rate greater than 20 percent of the nominal value is also an essential variable.

Butt Weld Procedure Qualification

To qualify a procedure for butt welds, a butt weld test joint is made by joining two pieces of pipe. A butt weld procedure only qualifies the procedure for butt welds. Fillet welds or branch connection welds require separate qualification.

API 1104 gives requirements for removing test specimens from the welded test joint. The number and type of specimens depend on pipe diameter, wall thickness, and SMYS.

Common test specimens include:

  • Tensile strength specimens
  • Nick breaks specimens
  • Root bend specimens
  • Face bend specimens
  • Side bend specimens

Tensile Strength Test

Tension specimens are used to determine whether the weld meets the required tensile strength. The tensile strength of the weld must be no less than that specified for the base metal.

If the specimen fails in the pipe material and produces a tensile strength not less than 95 percent of the specified tensile strength of the pipe material, the test is acceptable.

Nick Break Test

Nick break specimens are used to expose the weld metal and evaluate internal soundness. The exposed weld metal surfaces must show complete fusion and penetration.

Acceptance criteria include limits for pore size, total pore area, slag inclusion depth, slag inclusion length, and separation between adjacent slag inclusions.

Bend Testing

Root bend, face bend, and side bend tests are used to evaluate weld soundness and ductility.

For heavier wall pipe, side bend specimens are required instead of face and root bend specimens when the wall thickness is greater than 0.500 inch. This is because a thicker pipe is more suitable for side bend testing.

Fillet Weld Procedure Qualification

API 1104 also covers the qualification of fillet weld procedures. Fillet weld procedures may be qualified using a branch connection weld or a socket weld configuration.

Qualification requires four nick break specimens removed from the welded coupon at 90-degree intervals. The acceptance criteria are the same as those used for nick break specimens in butt weld procedure qualification.
