Study Guide for API 1104 (22 st Edition)
API 1104 provides a list of eight permitted welding processes. They are listed below:
(a) Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW).
(b) Submerged arc welding (SAW).
(c) Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW).
(d) Gas metal arc welding (GMAW).
(e) Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW).
(f) Plasma arc welding (PAW).
(g) Oxyacetylene welding (OAW).
(h) Flash butt welding (FW).
API 1104 also states that these processes may be applied using manual, semiautomatic, mechanized, or automatic welding techniques or a combination of these techniques. All of these techniques, except manual welding, are defined in Section 3. Study Guide Table 1.1 indicates which techniques are
API 1104 covers procedures for various NDT methods and the acceptance standards to be applied to production welds. The NDT methods are listed below, along with their AWS abbreviations:
(a) Radiographic Testing (RT).
(b) Magnetic particle testing (MT).
(c) Liquid penetrant testing (PT).
(d) Ultrasonic testing (UT).
(e) Visual testing (VT).
The numerical values stated in API 1104 are given in either U.S. Customary units or metric (SI) units.
The U.S. Customary values typically appear first, followed by the SI units in parentheses, but the SI units are approximations of the corresponding U.S. customary units. API 1104 emphasizes that you must use one system or the other and not combine them.

What You Will Learn in This Quiz
In API 1104 Section 1, candidates must understand the scope of the standard and the welding processes permitted by API 1104. This section also explains how welding may be performed using different techniques and how production welds may be examined using different NDT methods.
This practice test will help you understand:
-
The eight welding processes permitted by API 1104
-
Manual, semiautomatic, mechanized, and automatic welding techniques
-
Which welding processes can be used with different welding techniques
-
NDT methods covered by API 1104
-
Common AWS abbreviations such as RT, MT, PT, UT, and VT
-
Use of U.S. Customary and SI metric units in API 1104
-
Why one unit system must be used consistently without mixing values
Welding Processes Covered in API 1104
API 1104 permits the following welding processes:
-
Shielded Metal Arc Welding – SMAW
-
Submerged Arc Welding – SAW
-
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding – GTAW
-
Gas Metal Arc Welding – GMAW
-
Flux-Cored Arc Welding – FCAW
-
Plasma Arc Welding – PAW
-
Oxyacetylene Welding – OAW
-
Flash Butt Welding – FW
These processes may be applied using manual, semiautomatic, mechanized, or automatic welding techniques, depending on the process requirements.
NDT Methods Covered in API 1104
API 1104 also covers procedures and acceptance standards for production weld inspection. The main NDT methods included are:
-
Radiographic Testing – RT
-
Magnetic Particle Testing – MT
-
Liquid Penetrant Testing – PT
-
Ultrasonic Testing – UT
-
Visual Testing – VT
Understanding these methods and their abbreviations is very important for the CWI Part C open book exam.
Why Practice Section 1 Scope?
Many candidates ignore Section 1 because it appears simple, but it is an important foundation for API 1104. The CWI Part C exam requires quick navigation and correct understanding of the code. Even basic questions from the scope section can become confusing if you are not familiar with permitted welding processes, inspection methods, and unit requirements.
This short quiz will help you revise the section quickly and improve your confidence before the exam.
