These minimum qualifications must be documented in your application and are verified after submission. API also notes that a dishonorable military discharge does not qualify for military service credit.
API 510 Recertification Overview
API 510 inspectors must apply for recertification every 3 years through the ICP Portal. You can apply 90 days before your certification expires and still apply during a 90-day grace period after expiration, although late fees apply after the expiration date. If you do not submit your recertification application by the end of the grace period, your certification expires, and you must submit a new application and pass the full exam again.
API 510 Recertification Requirements
To recertify successfully, candidates must meet the required conditions during each recertification cycle.
1. Work Requirement – Every 3 Years
You must show that at least 20% of your time during the most recent three-year certification period was spent performing or supervising pressure vessel inspection activities as described in API 510. If you have not remained active in pressure vessel inspection work, you may need to take the full exam again.
2. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – Every 3 Years
API 510 inspectors must complete 24 CPD hours during each 3-year certification cycle. These activities must be relevant to inspection and mechanical integrity assurance in the petroleum and petrochemical industry. API says the CPD activities should span at least two categories, and proof of completion must be uploaded to the CPD Tracking page in the ICP Portal along with the recertification application.
3. Web Quiz – Every 6 Years
Every 6 years, API 510 certificants must complete an online open-book web quiz to recertify. The quiz becomes available 90 days before expiration and stays available through the 90-day grace period after expiration. The quiz has 25 questions, gives you 4 total hours, and can be paused up to three times. If you fail once, you may retake it. If you fail a second time, you cannot recertify through the quiz route and must apply again and pass the full API 510 examination.
Final Note for API 510 Candidates
Before applying, always verify the latest official exam publications, effectiveness sheets, qualification rules, and recertification details on the API website, because exam references and policies can change by exam window. For the current cycle, API’s official API 510 page points candidates to the September 2025 to May 2026 publications’ effectiveness sheet and the related Body of Knowledge.
