What Is the ICC 47P Reinforced Concrete Plans Exam?

The ICC 47P Reinforced Concrete Plans Exam is the Plans Module associated with the International Code Council (ICC) Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector certification pathway.

The examination evaluates a candidate’s ability to interpret approved reinforced concrete construction plans and specifications and identify the requirements for concrete structural elements.

Candidates should be able to read reinforcement schedules, structural notes, foundation plans, beam and column details, slab and shear wall reinforcement, construction joints, and other approved structural drawings.

The Plans Module is part of a broader modular certification pathway that includes the Reinforced Concrete Codes examination and, where required, the Special Inspector General Requirements examination.

What Will You Learn?

By practicing these questions, you can improve your ability to:

  • Interpret structural floor plans, column schedules, sections and concrete reinforcement details.

  • Verify reinforcing bar diameter, grade, quantity, location, concrete cover and spacing.

  • Calculate footing volumes, beam elevations, reinforcement quantities, development lengths and lap splice dimensions.

  • Identify discrepancies between approved drawings and actual construction conditions.

  • Understand the placement of column ties, stirrups, hooks, cross-ties and confinement reinforcement.

  • Review structural openings, embedded items, construction joints and reinforcement continuity.

  • Coordinate information from multiple approved structural drawings during inspection.

What Does a Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector Do?

A Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector verifies that concrete construction is carried out according to the approved plans, specifications, and applicable special-inspection requirements.

Typical responsibilities include reviewing the statement of special inspections, examining reinforcing steel placement, verifying formwork and structural dimensions, checking concrete quality, witnessing designated concrete construction activities, and documenting inspection findings.

Depending on the assigned inspection responsibilities, an inspector may also collect material samples, perform required field tests, coordinate with the registered design professional, and prepare inspection reports.

When construction does not conform to the approved drawings or specifications, the special inspector documents and reports the discrepancy through the required procedures.

Important: Holding an ICC credential alone does not automatically authorize an individual to perform special inspections on every project. Approval as a special inspector under the applicable building code is subject to the authority having jurisdiction.

Who Is Eligible for the ICC 47P Exam?

The ICC 47P examination is relevant to individuals preparing for reinforced concrete plan-reading and special-inspection responsibilities.

It is especially useful for:

  • Civil and structural engineers.

  • Reinforced concrete inspectors and trainee special inspectors.

  • Construction quality control and quality assurance professionals.

  • Concrete testing technicians seeking to expand their qualifications.

  • Construction supervisors and field engineers.

  • Building inspection professionals.

  • Candidates pursuing ICC Category 47, 48, or 49 credentials.

Candidates should have a working understanding of reinforced concrete construction, structural drawings, reinforcement details, and relevant construction terminology.

You do not need to complete every certification module before beginning the 47P examination. ICC permits candidates to complete the required special-inspector modules in different orders.

However, passing the 47P module alone is not sufficient to obtain the full Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector certification.

ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector Certification Requirements

The ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector pathway involves multiple examination modules and, for higher certification categories, additional qualifications.

Step 1: Complete ICC Category 47 – Reinforced Concrete

Candidates must complete the applicable ICC examination modules:

Exam ID Required Module
GR Special Inspector General Requirements(Take Free ICC GR Exam Practice Test)
47C Reinforced Concrete Codes (Take Free ICC 47C Exam Practice Test)
47P Reinforced Concrete Plans

GR Exception: Candidates who already hold an active ICC Special Inspector certification generally do not need to repeat the GR examination.

ICC allows candidates three years to complete the necessary modules and prerequisites for the special inspector certification pathway.

Step 2: ICC Category 48 – Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector Associate

To pursue Category 48, candidates generally need to:

  1. Achieve ICC Category 47.

  2. Obtain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I certification.

  3. Submit proof of the applicable active ACI Grade I certification to ICC for review.

Category 48 is the Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector Associate credential.

Step 3: ICC Category 49 – Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector

Candidates pursuing Category 49 must:

  1. Achieve ICC Category 47.

  2. Complete the applicable ACI requirements, including the ACI Grade I prerequisite for initial qualification.

  3. Apply through ACI for the Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector/Experience Evaluation Results certification process.

  4. Have the required education and work experience verified through ACI.

  5. Complete ICC’s credentialing requirements.

The Category 49 credential represents the full Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector certification pathway.

ICC 47P Certification Validity

The ICC 47P examination is an individual exam module, not a standalone renewable certification.

ICC generally allows three years to complete all required special-inspector examinations and prerequisites for the applicable credential.

Once a qualifying ICC certification is issued, its normal certification validity period is three years, subject to ICC’s renewal requirements.

Candidates should distinguish between passing the 47P exam module, completing Category 47, and receiving Category 48 or Category 49 credentials.

ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector Recertification

ICC certifications normally require renewal every three years.

Renewal commonly involves:

  • Completing qualifying continuing education activities.

  • Earning the required Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

  • Meeting ICC’s applicable education-source requirements.

  • Maintaining and submitting the required renewal information.

  • Paying applicable renewal fees.

For a single standard ICC certification, the published renewal guidance generally specifies 1.5 CEUs, with qualifying ICC or Preferred Provider training contributing the required share.

Additional certifications may change the total CEU requirement.

Candidates should verify the current renewal requirements through their myICC account because certification status, renewal deadlines, and administrative requirements can vary.

The 47P exam module itself does not have a separate three-year recertification requirement.

How to Prepare for the ICC 47P Plans Exam

Successful preparation requires more than memorizing definitions. Candidates should develop the ability to locate and interpret information quickly from several interconnected structural drawings.

A useful preparation approach is to:

  1. Study structural plans and general notes: Understand drawing legends, grids, elevations, member designations, sections, revisions, and schedules.

  2. Practice reinforcement calculations: Review bar sizes, spacing, quantities, concrete cover, hooks, bends, lap splices, and development lengths.

  3. Review concrete member details: Focus on footings, columns, beams, slabs, shear walls, boundaries and openings.

  4. Practice multi-drawing coordination: Compare the general schedule with specific sections, details, and revision notes.

  5. Take timed practice tests: Attempt the 50-question UpWeld mock test and review every incorrect answer.

The objective is to understand why a particular inspection finding is correct, rather than memorize an answer without interpreting the drawing.
